Monroe Memories

So why is Marilyn Monroe’s beauty so iconic?

Movie star magic

In retrospect, she seemed to be a product, as well as a person.

Colouring her hair light blonde, affecting baby talk now and then, along with her wiggle-walk, seemed to cement her reputation as a vixen, automatically discounting her innate intelligence, and setting herself up as a target for exploitation and envy.

Sadly, she was not able to find serenity in her life, although she seemed to seek it by drinking booze, smoking cigarettes, and swallowing barbiturates.

(Judy Garland also passed away from overdosing on barbiturates.)

Marilyn left a lot behind when she died at the young-ish age of 36 in 1962.

Mostly captured on film, her lovely face and figure, along with her sweet voice, is forever available and easily accessible for all to enjoy.

What are some of your favorite films with Marilyn Monroe?

I really liked her in “Bus Stop,” and “Niagara.”

I’m sorry that she had to endure all kinds of emotional and mental issues, along with addiction problems.

When you consider it, addictions and drug abuse seem to be a sad fate of many rich and famous stars.

Many of them die young, or else prematurely.

Readers are leaders

In the end, what people see when they look at Marilyn Monroe (Norma Jean Baker) depends on how you perceive her in the light of hindsight and our modern-day mindset.

Was Marilyn just a tragic beauty? Or was she just an enviable person out of touch with life’s realities?

Or was she like you and me, someone looking to live life, make friends and be happy.

Chances are, not being famous may be better than all the pressures of dealing with the public, and the share of criticisms, sufferings and insecurities that are often brought on by other people’s demands and expectations!

We will never know what really happened to Marilyn, since conspiracies abound surrounding her death, but in life she certainly made a splash!

Snow White Moment

So this just happened to me.

My Snow White Moment

A bird alighted on my hand.

My friend Kelly wrote on my Facebook post, “Hello Snow White!”

First the fledgling followed me.

Then it bombed my head!

Afterwards, this happened.

Pretty amazing, isn’t it?

Fairytale fun in the summer sun!

Thursday Book Review: Sell or Be Sold

We live in a world of sellers.

A good read

These days many sales people are called “influencers.”

Online or in-person someone is always going to try and sell you something that you don’t want or need.

I think back of what McDonald’s was doing to me as a kid.

My mom was a fabulous cook.

We would turn up our noses at her delicious soups and stews and wonderful meals because we wanted McDonald’s instead.

Ugh!.

Her homemade quality meals were so much better than horrible fast food from McDonald’s.

Not only were her delicious main courses fabulous we also enjoyed her wonderful baking.

Yet the power of mass media changed our minds about her hard work.

Nevertheless she instilled in me a love for good food, especially good healthy food.

Delicious homemade food

My cooking is not perfect and sometimes I burn things but I know I’m eating better by eating at home.

A little about the author.

He is a great real-estate salesman.

A little about the book.

It is a tutorial of sorts to help the person who wants to be successful in business and in life.

Cardone has a podcast the Cardone Zone and also a YouTube channel.

Although I am only halfway through the book I find it very illuminating and informative.

Sell or be sold, you decide.

Wednesday Diet Wisdom: What They Don’t Tell You

Food and drink are only two parts of the weightloss puzzle. There is more to it.

It’s amazing how many things contribute to your health and fitness.

For one thing, consider your metabolism.

Some people can digest certain foods better than others. Some people can burn more calories than other people can.

For those in the Western world, our high-fat and high-carb SAD (standard American diet) is the harbinger of many terrible diseases.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0925443908001828#:~:text=Abstract,%2C%20metabolic%20syndrome%2C%20and%20diabetes.

Drastic dieting doesn’t help either.

Besides being unsustainable, your body might slow down your BMR (basal metabolic rate) because it’s afraid you are going to quit eating altogether. Then it will be really hard to lose weight.

The best way to increase your metabolic weight is exercise.

No one tells you about your fat mass, skeletal muscle, viseral fat, or bone mass among other physical metrics that affect your health.

You are a chemical marvel, and your body is an amazing and organic, ever-changing, ever-responsive constant companion who should be loved and cared for as long as you live.

Regardless of your shape and size, educating yourself about how your unique body is composed and how it reacts to nutrients and nourishments is vital.

I am still counting calories and I am beginning to lift weights to improve my BMR and get stronger, among other things.

Weight-training is great for overall health.

There is so much they haven’t told you about your wonderful self.

Take care of your body, support it, love it, nourish it and exercise it and your body will take care of you in amazing ways, especially as you get older!

I may not be skinny yet, but I love life and I love my amazing body now that I have learned more about it, and how to care better for it!

P.S. All diet advice by me is my opinion and does not reflect on any professional advice. Lose weight at your own risk.

On the Tube: My Favourite Marple

Humorous Detective

Who doesn’t just love Agatha Christie?

When life gets rather stressful, I often binge on Poirot and Miss Marple episodes found for free online, or recorded on a streaming service.

Last night, we watched Helen Hayes play Miss Marple on a “Caribbean Mystery

https://youtu.be/6GmxYWyceSM

Then we watched Julia Mckenzie playing Miss Marple in the same story.

https://youtu.be/e4DeZB1ubro

I also enjoy watching Geraldine McEwan as Miss Marple, and I’ve seen all the Marple episodes with Joan Hickson, who began playing the amateur detective at age 78 .

Angela Landsbury played Miss Marple and a few others, but based on all my views of Marple movies and broadcasts, I like Margaret Rutherford best.

Maybe it was her bumbling behavior or her sidekick real-life husband Stringer Davis who joined her in her exploits, but there is nothing like the influential eloquence of Ms. Rutherford as Miss Marple!

Acrually, Rutherford was a friend of author Agatha Christie and because of that she probably had an advantage!

Municipal Band Music

Our New Ulm Municipal Band

We really enjoyed the sounds of our Municipal band last night!

Brass band sounds

My favourite was the medley from Meredith Wilson’s, “The Music Man.”

I found out Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster are performing that Hollywood musical on Broadway!

Molly and Sonny Boy

My own music duo Molly and Sonny Boy (me and hubby Jim) will be performing here at German Park on June 20, 2022!

Here is a sample of our original music!

Our Ambassadors

The Concord Singers

We have an all-male vocal group in New Ulm called the Concord Singers.

Their title is New Ulm’s Ambassadors of Goodwill.

https://concordsingers.com/

Last night we went to hear them perform at German Park.

Fun German Songs

The group has been in the area for over 90 years

It’s a nod to our German Heritage here in my hometown of New Ulm, Minnesota!

Each summer the Concord Singers are a part of an annual celebration called Bavarian Blast.

Clap along 👏

Change of scenery

The sun peeking through the trees

There is so much to enjoy when the weather turns warmer.

Walks up the street enjoying the blue sky, the trees, and homes brings fun and a bit of stress relief from the crazy news.

To feel better, take time to take in nature.

Lush trees

Saturday Sunshine

Yesterday was crazy.

Mopping slop

What’s a nightmare?

Water in the basement. That’s what.

I went in the laundry room the day before wondering why there was so much water on the floor.

It was running through a wall.

I went to the back room to discover the water in the laundry room was nothing compared to the water on the floor in the back basement room, where the Internet modem is, along with numerous boxes and bins, old computer modems and old electronics. What a pain!

All those boxes and bins standing in 2 to three inches of water.

I mopped and mopped.

I finally had hubby turn off the water to see if it was leaky walls or a leaking pipe.

I phoned the plumber to see if they could squeeze me in on Friday.

They could not.

I spent hours and hours with hubby clearing out that wet storage room.

In desperation, I called the plumber again for a referral. He graciously obliged me with a referral.

A freelance plumber came out

He spotted the problem after awhile.

It turns the problem was pipe in the wall, where we had installed an outdoor faucet for the garden hose, had burst in winter. Never leave the water hose on in the freezing weather!

He replaced the pipe and so far all is well.

A replacement pipe.

Hopefully the problem is solved now.

It looks that way.

I’m very grateful for our local plumber’s referral, and the freelance plumber who was available yesterday to come over, spot and solve our problem!

Like Shakespeare says, “All’s well that ends well!

After the storm

The sun is out now

Last night we were in a tornado warning.

There was a lot of rain and lightning and thunder.

Scary night

For awhile we lost the Internet and even our Starlink satellite service was not receiving.

But everything got back online after a spell.

A lovely day today

The birds and squirrels are happy this morning and the chipmunks and rabbits are glad the storm is over. So am I!!!
