Out for Good

Sozial served great meals

Three businesses closed their doors recently in my city of New Ulm, MN.

A place called Sozial was where I took my Spring Break with hubby when the going was tough.

Spring break

Its doors are permanently closed.

Sozial is now a food truck.

Mona Lena is closed.

Hubby and me

Yesterday I drove past Clark. Closed. Shut down. Sad.

Closed.

I made a small video of the sad occasion.

After swimming at the local rec center we went out for ice cream!

Matcha & Pistachio nut 😋

Love and support the small mom and pop businesses in your town because it’s always sad when they can’t survive.

I scream for ice cream! Lol!

Some businesses do very well if there is a market for them.

What the market wants

P.S. Each Saturday I will focus on a “This is where I live, and this is why it’s special,” segment of my blog.

Farmer’s Market Song

Gigantic radishes

I love Farmer’s markets.

I even wrote a lovely original short song about it.  🎶

Home-grown tomatoes fresh off the farm
Lovely green onions

So, not only can you buy fresh produce at the farmer’s market, but fresh baked goods and jars of tasty delicious delights!

Yes! Farmer’s markets may be trendy, but they are growing in popularity!

Join the trend and treat yourself at your local Farmers market!

P.S. If nothing is ready, well you just have to watch and wait!😀

The Joy of Snacks

A snack can be anything from meal-like to minute

In America we live in a culture of snacks.

Snacks dominate our day.  We love to eat.

These days there is a trend toward a grab at healthier snacks. Perhaps at the back of our minds we think we will be skinnier if we eat healthier. This outcome may or may not happen, but we remain hopeful.

In olden days, people would eschew snacks for three square meals a day. You wouldn’t want to ruin your appetite, right?

Our appetite is stronger than ever. There are so many tempting snacks.

Even though we strive to eat healthier, the typical snacks are still as popular as ever. French fries, potato chips, chocolate bars, ice cream, donuts, tortilla chips and salsa, soft drinks and cupcakes.

More than 50% of Americans enjoy a cup of coffee everyday instead of tea. We are a nation of coffee drinkers and we like it that way.

Of course, we shouldn’t mention obesity. But the obvious truth is most of us adults are overweight or obese. It’s not like in the movies where most of the women and men are skinny and sexy.

No doubt about it, one of the glories of life, is the often ignored, albeit often indulged in, ubiquitous snacks.

If you plan to visit with a radio DJ or want to see a friend to practice guitar, bagels and cream cheese are always popular. Bring snacks and you’ll be well-loved.

What are some of your favorite snacks?

Here are ten of mine.

1. Cookies.

2. Tortilla chips and dip.

3. Chocolate, preferably Belgian with hazelnuts.

4. Tangerines.

5. Fresh fruit salad.

6. Tea and muffins.

7. Coffee and donuts.

8. Pistachio ice cream.

9. Cheesecake with Italian cherry sauce.

10. Black licorice such as that found in a big box of Good and Plenty.

Next time you look in the mirror at your body in your swimsuit, and you bemoan your excess adipose tissue, remember a lot of it was bought and paid for in snacks!

Move more and eat less junk

image

Long ago a lady told me the best way to eat. She was a para-professional who worked with children in the public school system. She said after the age of 40, she could no longer eat like she did when she was young.
She told me she didn’t eat hardly anything for breakfast. She ate a small amount for lunch.
Supper was her main meal.
At the time, I was in my early twenties, and I basically ate whatever I liked. I was very thin, and high-strung. I was active and full of energy. I burned a lot of calories.
Those words she said to me seemed pitiful.
Who wanted to deprive themselves?
Certainly not I!
And yet, her words followed me down through time. To the place where now I understand the value of exercise and eating lightly. Nevertheless, the secret to being fit, is in the choice of your eating, and getting regular exercise.
In the future, I imagine weight will not be a problem.
Now and then we read of different treatments for people who have obesity. Some scientific tests hold out astonishing promises for the obese. But most of them come with risks we do not have to take.
Someday, medical science will find a quick and efficient way for all of us to be svelte.
Currently, the best way to get skinny is probably the healthiest, if we are willing to try hard to move more and eat less junk.

Musically yours, Amy Zents
